All the things I wish I knew before I got my first ever puppy!

If you’ve read the article Collars vs Harnesses, you’ll know that it’s quite a controversial subject in the dog world, in fact, it almost makes Brexit seem like an insignificant disagreement! But if you are pro harness- which in fairness, I think a lot of people and experts are nowadays, here’s a list of some of the highest rated and reviewed harnesses around!
ECOBARK MAX COMFORT AND CONTROL DOG HARNESS
For the environmentally conscious dog owner, EcoBark have produced this max comfort and control dog harness. Made with highly durable environmentally friendly material, including recycled straps and available in a range of colours and sizes, it features a no pull and no choke design, it also has anti rub technology to ensure it doesn’t aggravate your dog in any way.

PUPPIA RIGHT FIT
If you have a small breed dog, this is probably one of the best harnesses on the market for them. It’s soft mesh makes it comfortable for them to wear, but is also easy to wash when they get it dirty! If you’re worried about it been small enough for your dog, check out their amazon reviews- they’re used for cats and kittens as well!
PETSAFE 3 IN 1 HARNESS
This is definitely one of the most all inclusive harnesses on the market at the moment, it has a back and chest clip for normal walking or for no pull, but on top of that it also has a car safety restraint option to limit your dog’s movement in a car. It’s adjustable in 5 different places so can be tailored to your dog. However some reviews have suggested that although great on paper, it breaks easily, so if you have a particularly rambunctious dog you may be ordering a replacement sooner than you expected!

TRUE LOVE HARNESS
This is the first harness I got for Cooper and as a small puppy it was great. My friend recommended it to me as she uses it for her 2 year old retriever. Her dog must have been a bit better behaved than Cooper was though! It has 2 clasps that need to be done up compared to just 1, if your dog is a wriggle master and doesn’t want it on, you're going to have a battle on your hands! Its fully adjustable and grows a lot with your dog both around their neck and chest, so it’s a great choice if you have a larger breed puppy that’s going to be growing quickly- especially as its very reasonably priced and a good quality as well! It comes in a variety of colours and sizes.

RUFFWEAR FRONT RANGE HARNESS
Available in a range of 6 colours and sizes, this is great choice of harness for all circumstances. It’s not as easy to fit as the Julius K9 is, but it’s not overly complicated either! It had 2 attachment points, one on the back and one of the chest. The chest attachment is particularly handy if your dog is a puller or if you want an easy place to clip your dogs seat belt to in the car.
HALTI HARNESS
Just putting it out there right now, your dog is probably going to hate this harness at first, but that’s only because it gives you the most control- especially if you have a puller! The idea behind this type of harness is that it redirects the pull onto their nose which is very uncomfortable for them, therefore, hopefully discouraging them from pulling. When I was researching this collar I read a few articles claiming that they are inhumane because they make a dog uncomfortable… but surely no more uncomfortable that them straining and choking against a collar- or even worse, your dog ending up getting hit by a car because they’ve bolted across a road and pulled you with them!

PUPPIA SOFT HARNESS
Especially ideal for puppies and smaller breeds, these harnesses are a reasonable price and are made from a soft air mesh material guaranteeing a comfortable feel for your pup. It is secured by a single clip which can make putting it on a little more tricky in comparison to some of the other harnesses on this list- especially if you have a larger breed dog. The harness is available in 5 sizes ranging from XS to XL, unfortunately although the XS fits the smallest of breeds, the XL only really covers up to Collie sized dogs.

JULIUS K9
These are by far the most popular harnesses that I see dogs in and they are popular for good reason! They are extremely well made and super easy to get on and off your dog. It comes in over 40 different colour variations and is sized from Baby 1 to Size 4, which in dog terms cover anything from teacup breeds to larger breeds such as a Newfoundland. You also have the option of buying personalised strips to go on the side of the harness which is a nice touch, and also very useful if for example you have a nervous dog and you want a way of warning people. You can also buy a chest strap for them which gives you an extra D ring in the front- really useful for clipping them in in the car! They’re not the cheapest harness around, but you’re getting the quality!
RUFFWEAR HI & LIGHT
Have an active dog that loves nothing more than running around in all weathers including the heat- well this is the harness for you. Unlike a lot of heavier padded harnesses, this harness is extremely lightweight and comes with a top aluminium attachment point and a small pouch. It’s a great harness that’s easy to adjust and it doesn’t restrict your dogs movement in anyway!
